AI agents: A conundrum wrapped in a buzzword

Buzzwords are a peculiar manifestation that is as old as the tech industry itself. There are some that become routinely stretched to the point of being meaningless or unrecognizable. The most current example of this phenomenon is the term 'AI agent' and its variants, such as 'agentic.' It is no surprise then that even people with software engineering backgrounds who work for one of the premier venture capital firms, like Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), admit that nobody really knows what an AI agent is.

An interesting anecdote was stirred up recently when one of the partners at a16z reflected publicly on the matter. Although not admitting outright that he or they had any clue about AI agents, they did note that there's plenty of interest in and work being done on artificial intelligence agents.

To put it in a layman's term, AI agents are often touted as forming an artificial general intelligence (AGI), a point at which a computer can perform most of the task a human intelligence could, given adequate data and computing power. This would be the real "skynet" that the Terminator movies warned us about, but they are a future event, at best a promise, rather than a reality.

This lack of a clear understanding is not disconcerting. Even the most advanced software engineers working on these AI agents often describe them as a 'black box' with hardly any particularly perceivable patterns or logic. However, the technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, exacerbating the ambiguity further.

Therefore, the term 'AI agent' is a conundrum wrapped in a buzzword. One could argue that the AI agent is a promising yet hazy future standing behind the curtain of today's innovative and rapidly
