Job seekers increasingly skeptical of AI looking at their resume - WTOP
The advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology have made it possible for companies to use AI systems to vet resumes, but job seekers are becoming increasingly skeptical of this technology.
Part of the reason for this skepticism stems from the wide variety of systems that companies use. Not all of these systems are created equal, and some of the AI resume screening software is known to have flaws. These flaws include a tendency to discard resumes with common keywords, misunderstanding the context of some words, and even algorithmic bias that disadvantages certain groups of people.
These flaws have led to instances where talented individuals have been overlooked, and some potential employees have faced discriminatory treatment. Consequently, these issues have led to a loss of trust among job seekers.
Despite these setbacks, companies that use AI to screen resumes argue that the technology is vital for staying competitive in the job market. They use AI to filter out unqualified or unsuitable applicants, leaving only the most qualified candidates to be interviewed.
Yet, job seekers continue to question the fairness and accuracy of these AI systems. Some go to great lengths to ensure their resume is tailored correctly with appropriate keywords, ensuring its AI-friendly. This strategic approach is aimed at getting their resumes through the initial AI gatekeepers and getting a chance to make it to the next stage of the hiring process โ the human-to-human interaction.
Ultimately, job seekers remain concerned about the potential limits of AI technology and how it can influence their chances of securing a job. Until companies figure out how to address these concerns and make their AI tools more reliable, it may be challenging to undo the growing skepticism. This is especially true considering the role human intuition and empathy play in the hiring process, which no AI software can fully replicate
