Aging is a complex and unpredictable process that affects everyone differently. While some people may experience wrinkles and graying hair, others may see a decline in their physical and cognitive abilities. To determine the status of a person’s aging process, researchers from the University of Pisa in Italy are exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI). In a recent study, a team of researchers was able to analyze population-based data using machine learning algorithms to uncover connections between certain biomarkers and biological aging.

Accelerating measures of aging, such as graying hair and joint pain, are particularly concerning for patients, as they can greatly affect a person's quality of life. However, standard biomarkers of aging, like the number of wrinkles or age-related health issues, are not straightforward measures of complete aging. Instead, researchers are now turning to AI to ensure that a patient's biological age, as it relates to their physical health, is accurately assessed.

The researchers trained their AI system to recognize biomarkers and risk factors that are associated with aging. Using a variety of techniques, such as ‘deep learning’ methods, the AI system was able to predict parameters of the aging process with great accuracy. The system analyzed a range of demographic information, including age, sex, body mass index, blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose levels and measured parameters such as grip strength, lean body mass, and cognitive function.

The accuracy of the AI system is encouraging for those studying geriatrics. In the future, the program could possibly offer patients customized recommendations for how to manage their aging process more effectively. It may be used to predict the likelihood of various age-related diseases, allowing people to take proactive steps to maintain good health.

Moreover, this study underlines the capability of AI technology to provide insights and make predictions that were previously impossible.
