Congress tries to figure out how to keep the US ahead of China in race for AI development - KOMO
In a move that highlights the growing competition between the United States and China, Congress is currently trying to figure out how to stay ahead of the latter in the race for AI development. Amidst rising worries about the technological prowess of the two nations, politicians are scrambling to develop policies and allocate resources that would solidify the US' position as a leader in AI technology.
Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Bernard Chang, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, expressed his concerns to the press, saying, "The race for AI supremacy is in full swing, and we cannot afford to lag behind China." Chang asserts that AI technology is not merely about being ahead in the digital race, but about the overall influence and leadership that it bears on global issues, especially National Defense and Security.
The urgency to formulate a concrete plan comes as no surprise given that China has already demonstrated its capabilities in the AI sphere, having developed a domestic drone industry that can rival that of the US, and the manufacture of AI-powered devices that are way ahead of what the US can offer.
In response to these threats, Congress is looking towards funding breakthrough research projects, allocating more resources to top AI laboratories, incentivizing AI companies and start-ups, and encouraging private investments in AI technology. Furthermore, there are few bipartisan bills presently under consideration that aim to further propel the US' AI efforts.
