Amazon debuts a warehouse robot with a sense of ‘touch’
throats conveyors and couriers.
Already, Amazon has seen a decrease in human movement within the warehouses - greatly making the work process effective, fast, and much accurate. Amazon's warehouse robot, Vulcan, can now feel the items it touches. This makes it even more efficient and accurate in packing and unpacking items in the warehouses.
Amazon believes that this ability will significantly aid in handling different types and sizes of boxes, making the warehouse experience seamless. Not only that, the ground-breaking technology involved allows the robot to be more precise when it comes to maneuvering objects that it might come across.
Vulcan works by using a two-arm system. Both arms are capable of reaching the tightest corners of shelves in the warehouse. It is amazing how a force sensor technology combined with the prosthetic arms of Vulcan allows it to "feel" something that it is touching. This gives the robot a significant edge over regular robotics used in Amazon's warehouses.
Before, supervisors had to go round to carefully check if items were not damaged, a task that Vulcan can perform without any human intervention. This makes the warehouse a safer work environment and increases productivity, reducing the chances of errors thus speeding up the process of order fulfillment.
