I've managed a #1 score of 41.22% average for 14B parameter models on the Open LLM Leaderboard. As of this writing, sometimesanotion/Lamarck-14B-v0.7 is #8 for all models up to 70B parameters.
It took a custom toolchain around Arcee AI's mergekit to manage the complex merges, gradients, and LoRAs required to make this happen. I really like seeing features of many quality finetunes in one solid generalist model.

#phdone - I defended my PhD yesterday! A key lesson: it is amazing how open science and open source can empower beginners with limited resources:
I first learned about instruction-based classifiers like BERT-NLI 3-4 years ago, through the @HuggingFace ZeroShotClassificationPipeline. Digging deeper into this, it was surprisingly easy to find new datasets, newer base models, and reusable fine-tuning scripts on the HF Hub to create my own zeroshot models - although I didn't know much about fine-tuning at the time.
Thanks to the community effect of the Hub, my models were downloaded hundreds of thousands of times after a few months. Seeing my research being useful for people motivated me to improve and upload newer models. Leaving my contact details in the model cards led to academic cooperation and consulting contracts (and eventually my job at HF).
That's the power of open science & open source: learning, sharing, improving, collaborating.
I mean every word in my thesis acknowledgments (screenshot). I'm very grateful to my supervisors @vanatteveldt @CasAndreu @KasperWelbers for their guidance; to @profAndreaRenda and @CEPS_thinktank for enabling me to work part-time during the first year; to @huggingface for creating awesome tools and an awesome platform; and to many others who are not active on social media.

Language models are aligned to emulate the collective voice of many, resulting in outputs that align with no one in particular. 🗣️🌍
DITTO from Stanford University proposes that LLMs can be tuned with less than 10 samples! 🤯
What's DITTO? Demonstration ITerated Task Optimization (definitely came up with the acronym first! 😂)
Here is the step-by-step implementation: 🛠️
Initialization: Start with a reference language model (LM), a set of expert demonstrations, a sample size, and a frequency of sampling. 🏁
Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT): Begin by fine-tuning the reference LM on the set of expert demonstrations to create an initial policy P0. 🎚️
Iterative Comparison Sampling: For each iteration t:
Sample multiple completions from the policy Pt for each demonstration to create a new dataset Dt.
Construct a batch of comparisons where the demonstrations are ranked higher than all sampled model outputs from the current and previous iterations. 🔄
Policy Update:
Update the policy Pt using a Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) algorithm, which incorporates feedback from the batch of comparisons.
Increment the iteration and repeat the sampling and updating process until convergence. ⏭️
Result: The final policy P after sufficient iterations aligns more closely with the expert demonstrations, effectively tuning the LM to reflect user-specific preferences and behaviors. 🎯

"How expensive is it actually to teach a #LanguageModel German through #finetuning 💰💰💰? We get asked this quite often.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as among other factors:
⏹ each fine-tuning is different,
⏹ the hardware used can be a major cost driver,
⏹ the amount and type of training data can extend the process,
⏹ and the skills to be trained can increase the difficulty of fine-tuning.
However, we have broken down the costs incurred for our latest fine-tune ( VAGOsolutions/SauerkrautLM-Qwen-32b)
Base model: Qwen/Qwen1.5-32B
Fine-Tuning Goal: Train German language
Training dataset size: 160,000 SFT data / 110,000 DPO data
Training duration: 72.5 hours (2 epochs SFT / 1 epoch DPO)
GPU: 2x A100 SXM
New model: VAGOsolutions/SauerkrautLM-Qwen-32b
Total cost: 312 euros 💶
These are quite reasonable training costs considering the model now speaks passable German (previously very broken). Depending on the use case and process requirements, this can even be a real alternative to the costly continuous pre-training of foreign language models.

Reducing perplexity in LLM's through layer selective rank reduction
Layer-Selective Rank Reduction (LASER) is a denoising method that improves reasoning by the strategic removal of higher-order components from weight matrices in the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) layers without the need for additional parameters or training data. The two primary benefits of applying this method are reducing computational overhead of large language models and simultaneously improving output quality.
